What is the first thing you hear when you turn on the radio? If you're lucky, tune-in time actually catch some music, chances are, It is the latest generation of New Wave-New-Rave-alternative-shouty-vocalised-indie-rock. (I call it guitar briefly.) This is the case for a number of years, since the End of the higher levels of consciousness and the invasion of the Gallagher brothers in the early nineties.
Looking through the archives of the Guardian Online, pushed I am on an article entitled "Of Dance", which documented the destruction of some of the best British dance acts Bored in the last ten years. Fatboy Slim enjoyed less Success in the charts with the release of his latest album, Palookaville, while the once-popular magazines were reporting on the scene of the companies complete.
Muzik, Ministry and Jockey Slut once supplied readers with news, reviews and future versions of all upcoming dance acts. Today the sole survivor of the attack is Mixmag fighting the good fight alone in a world full of "guitar music" magazines such as KERRANG, Metal Hammer and NME. But Question is whether dance music is as dead as they say, then why get the huge queues in the clubs, and why are there still so many, many festivals with self-appointed "Dance tent?" The answer is simple: Dance music never died, it is simply transformed into something else.
I think it began when Bloc Party at the Scene burst at the turn of the century. Their debut album "Silent Alarm forged a new sound, it was just dance fans, what is needed – a mix of real instruments, fast beats and catchy bass lines. Move a couple of years and we now have the like of The Klaxons, (Master of the New Rave) Foals (Math-Rock anyone?) And The Futureheads. These bands seem confused as to where their loyalties should lie. Will play one evening they are, to a sell out crowd at the Brixton Academy, while The next night sees them spinning tunes on the ones and twos in an underground warehouse party.
Coincidentally, we have a wealth of dance acts with equally confused identities. Justice, Paris latest dance act a few wear skinny jean, leather jacket clad producers, intent on redirecting the scene. Their mix from over-compressed basslines and quirky electro beats has won fans from every genre of modern music. Similarly Soulwax (Belgian brothers David and Stephen Dewaele directed) continues its assault on two pillars of our ears through a combination of live shows and "Mash Up" blends like never before heard.
If the fusion of sounds presented here does not float your boat, try something more suited to Radio 2's added. LCD Soundsytem have recently released their second album with entitled Sound of Silver and present listeners with something that David Byrne would have been proud. Their harmonious blend of real instruments, Casio keyboards and vocals male has a massive hit with music listeners young and old, proven
The effect of this on the music industry is quite the opposite of the title of "Guardian" "Bored of Dance". A new generation of music, a new generation of fans and then there is no longer the limit. So what happens when I dance the night when whether in a dingy London club, I'm still allowed to bear Skinny jeans.
So when you hear someone say next time that dance music is dead, politely point out that dance music actually led the revolution that created the best sounds of this century. For the first time ever, Rock, Pop, breaks and beats all sitting happily together under one roof.
