In the past 35 years I have collected antique and vintage signed and unsigned costume and fine jewelry and through this experience I had many opportunities to find and purchase found the most amazing and rare collectibles, with values much higher than what I paid.
My tried and true secrets of working have and as a result I own an exceptional collection of mostly signed and make plays from the late 1800's to the present tio. I purchased have developed with and unsigned Miriam Haskell (some of them for Coco Chanel and Chanel have even featured in print ads from the late 1930's and 40's) Schiaparelli, Pennino McClelland-Barclay, Alfred Philippe for Trifari, DeMario, and several of the hottest names in the antique and vintage jewelry genre.
There are three secrets which I use to acquire such desirable pieces.
The first secret is to align myself with the companies that sell property from the apartment of the deceased. I create relationships with the owners of the company and ask if I can check all the ornaments (whether costume or fine) before real estate sales appointments. In tausche I help publish their impending sale by notice to antique dealers, shop owners and specialty store retailers, which may be in the market for large pieces of furniture, rugs and accessories. Around the property management company of this assistance is invaluable, because they can Opportunities better than market value, as they will be raised by the sale to retailers. There is a second part of this mystery, and that is that it works with auctioneers, to do the general auctions for household and personal items. If you have developed these relationships, they call to sell before the auction that you before the auction preview at a price much lower castes.
The second secret is, join with pawn shop owners. They do not sell costume jewelry, which they really do not intrinsic value but is much price for costume jewelry marketed by people who offer and sell for a small profit to me. The Third Secret and the sensitivity takes is when a widower or children of a recently deceased family member tries to move and has the desire to donate or to "clean out" their possessions personal influence. The family hears me through, I ran an ad in the local newspaper or Pennysaver magazine says that I pay cash for jewelry. The family will call them and I always have a more than fair price for the items they have and they are very pleased and I have found more wonderful treasures to add to my collection.
All in all, after a few years the use of the secrets of the above people will just come to know as the "jewelry lady" and calls are coming consistently and the jewelry selection will continue to get better and better.
